Asalamu ‘alaikum warahmatula wabarakatuhu.
One of the duas I enjoy supplicating especially in sujood is the dua of Yunus Alayhi Salam. It is also one of the duas to be supplicated when distressed.
The beautiful story of Prophet Yunus is one that I always think of especially when in a really difficult situation. In the dua, we basically call out on Allah سبحانه وتعالى seeking forgiveness affirming that we have been wrongdoers.
And, verily, Jonah was one of the Messengers. When he ran to the laden ship, he agreed to cast lots and he was among the losers, Then a big fish swallowed him and he had done an act worthy of blame. Had he not been of them who glorify Allah, he would have indeed remained inside its belly (the fish) till the Day of Resurrection. But We cast him forth on the naked shore while he was sick and We caused a plant of gourd to grow over him. And We sent him to a hundred thousand people or even more, and they believed, so We gave them enjoyment for a while. (37:139-148 Quran).
And [mention] the man of the fish, when he went off in anger and thought that We would not decree [anything] upon him. And he called out within the darknesses, “There is no deity except You; exalted are You. Indeed, I have been of the wrongdoers.”
So We responded to him and saved him from the distress. And thus do We save the believers. Quran 21:87-88
As quoted above, Prophet Yunus Alayhi Salam was trapped in the belly of a Whale. Three layers of darkness enveloped him, one above the other; the darkness of the Whale’s stomach, the darkness of the bottom of the sea and the darkness of the night.
His heart was moved by remembering Allah much and his tongue released soon after saying:
La ilaha ‘illa ‘anta, subhanaka ‘innee kuntu minath-thalimeena –
There is none worthy of worship in truth except You, far are You from imperfection, indeed I am from amongst the Thalimoon (oppressors).
The Prophet (Peace & Blessings of Allaah be upon Him) said to his companions:
“Shall I not tell you some words which, if distress or grief befalls any of you and he offers this prayer (supplication), it will bring him joy?
It is the du‘aa’ of Dhoo’l-Noon (i.e. Yunus or Jonah): ‘There is no god but You, Glory to You; verily I was one of the wrongdoers.’” (Saheeh al-Jaami‘, no. 2605).
‘There is no god but You, Glory to You; verily I was one of the wrongdoers.’” (Saheeh al-Jaami‘, no. 2605).
(Saheeh al-Jaami‘, no. 2605).
Insha Allah, just like Prophet Yunus Alayhi Salam, let us be amongst those whose tongues are moist with the remembrance of Allah. Let us glorify our Lord day and night and at times of ease. Verily, Allah will come to our aid in times of difficulty. He heard the supplication of Prophet Yunus alaihy salam and saved him while in the sea and in the belly of the whale. Likewise, your Lord Allah can Hear you wherever you are and in whatever condition. He is As Sami’ (The All Hearing, The Ever-Listening).
