My Hijab… My Shield

Bismillahir Rahmanir Raheem

Whenever I’m asked when I started wearing hijab usually interprets as when I started covering my hair. This is hijab but it is the outward hijab and we tend to forget what the inward hijab also represents.

Well you see, initially the outward hijab (covering of the head and chest) was the only type of hijab I understood too.

However, alhamdullilah with time, I realised that my hijab as a whole isn’t only the piece of fabric covering my head which I try to match my outfit. It is more than a fashion statement.
It is worship, it is protection from fitna (temptation) and it is haaya (shyness).

She wears her hijab with dignity feeling joyful and proud.

But what is her hijab ?

Is it the scarf on her head ?

With the garment she wears too ?

Perhaps a form of protection from evil and harm.

But does it include her speech ?

Possibly her thoughts too.

Surely it must include the way she walks.

Maybe the way she interacts.

Actually it could be her shyness too.

Whatever it is, I’ll conclude that it is her character as a whole.

For she approached me and said.

My hijab is all of the above and more.

It is my identity.

It is my imaan.

It is my shield.

It is taqwa.

It is tahara  and

Not forgetting liberation too.

What is your hijab?

Barakallahu feekum and Asalamu 'alaikum
